Krmpotich named Eclipse sports editor for Register and News-Review

A Wyoming native has been named sports editor at The Grundy Register and Parkersburg Eclipse News-Review.

Mitchell Krmpotich brings an excitement for athletics into his first professional position after graduating earlier this month from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.

“I am extremely excited to join the Mid-America team,” he said.

Krmpotich, 22, is a huge basketball fan and was a member of Gonzaga’s Bulldog Band throughout college, having served as both the band’s president and vice-president. While a member of the band he followed both Bulldog men’s and women’s teams to both the West Coast and NCAA Tournaments.

Krmpotich is the first full-time sports editor employed by either the Grundy Center or Parkersburg papers since Mid-America Publishing has owned the properties. He will be in charge of sports coverage for both papers, including photography.

“I think Mitch will be a wonderful fit into the Parkersburg and Grundy Center communities,” Mid-America President and CEO Ryan Harvey said. “We are excited to have him join the Mid-America family. He’s a very skilled journalist who is anxious to get his feet wet in this industry. We think his style will be one the community will love. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty and find the unique angle readers will love.”

“I see a lot of myself when I came out of college in Mitch,” said John Jensen, managing editor of the Eclipse News-Review and an award-winning sports writer. “He is energetic and eager to learn and will bring outstanding sports coverage to the area.”

Krmpotich graduated from Gonzaga with a degree in political science and minors in jazz performance and Catholic studies. While in school he wrote about the West Coast, Mountain West and Pac 12 Conferences for bustingbrackets.com, a web site that covers college basketball. He also served as an administrator and podcast host for a Web site that covers the Phoenix Suns NBA basketball team.

He said coming to communities like Grundy Center and Parkersburg is like coming home to the small towns around his hometown of Casper, Wyo.

“I have spent a lot of time in small Wyoming towns that are similar to the towns here in central and northeastern Iowa, he said.

Krmpotich is a diehard Denver Broncos, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rockies and Phoenix Suns fan while also following his alma mater.

“I love watching and being involved with sports,” he said. “My favorite sport usually changes with the seasons, but I especially enjoy basketball, football, and hockey.

“This is a wonderful community and I’m happy that I have an opportunity to serve it,” he said.
