New sports editor joins Ledger team
ELDORA – Mike Burvee, of West Des Moines, recently joined the Herald-Ledger as Sports Editor. Burvee brings with him two years of sports writing experience from the Sigourney News-Review, another Mid-America Publishing-owned newspaper. He also interned at the Marshalltown Times-Republican while attending Iowa State University, where he wrote feature and news stories. He received his bachelor’s from ISU in the areas of journalism and mass communications.
Burvee, an Iowa native, has covered prep-sports including volleyball, football, basketball, cross-country, wrestling, baseball, softball and track. He was regional sports editor at his prior post and understands the urgency sports reporting and juggling coverage, especially in small towns.
“I’m excited to find the gems that Hardin County has to offer,” Burvee said. “I know that small towns are overlooked easily, but they produce a lot of talent. I’m excited to see those talented athletes in person, and watch them continue to progress throughout their high school career.”
Burvee will be covering sports stories for South Hardin, BCLUW and AGWSR. When not reporting on local sports, he can be found golfing, hiking or doing any outdoorsy activities. He also enjoys photography and his cats, Sunshine and Takeshi.
